The Historical Culture To The Visitors With Passion To Satisfy Tourists By Tahki Huang

Theme pavilion of Taiwanese Puppet Show was established in 2003 and operated by the folk art lovers who also care about local community over a long period of time. After many a setback, it has become the symbolized and cultural implied museum by JHENG, Siou-Siang who administers positively.
The original shopkeeper was attracted to the reconstruction of the street environment, and worked with puppet merchants to construct the local puppet theatre. In addition to the puppets, costumes and properties, there is a small teaching park. Siou-Siang is a daughter-in-law of Tamsui, watching over the Old Street. She often introduces the historical culture to the visitors and communicates with locals. Children also like to go there after school.
She often introduces the historical culture to the visitors with passion to satisfy tourists. So we can also name it “Story House” and “ Music House”. The house shows characters of puppets; furthermore, we can get some information about Tamsui over here. The theme song of “ Beautiful Garden” was performed by the local young man, YOU, Jing-Yi, described the affection for the township.
The building was built in the medium-term of Japanese-Occupied Period, and decorated with washed pebbles. There is an attic up there and connected with stairs. It has been appraised as ancient sites. The origin of this building is a home school; although its indoor isn’t spacious, it has rich historical cultures.

Tahki Huang


Tahki Huang, 20, studies in Fu Jen Catholic University and major in Mass Communication.she was born from a middle-class family, and raised in Taipei since December 2th,1988. Art is her favorite subject, whenever just to believe herself, her heart is filled with great joy and interest.
She likes to drawing, playing music and she have many hobbies such as drawing, watching movies ,dancing, shopping and playing music . She should take her live seriously and cherish every minute. Besides, she is really an optimistic, lovely person, and she is confident that she can be a responsible one at this.
She had studied a lot. As for her future, It must be hard and full of mean tricks, but she is really enjoyed in the process of overcoming the obstacles and completing the tasks. She will accomplish her wish step by step. She could be do the best of her ability.

Jin Guang Glove Puppets 金光布袋戲(未完成)

Jin Guang Glove Puppets are usually two to three times larger than traditonal models, and are not limitedby the regulations of traditonal glove puppet head carving. Free to imageine and create, carvers started to produce some strange and unusual puppet head, and decorated their costurns with sequins and brightly colored strips of cloth. These strips of cloth, in five colors, stand in the background as the puppets enter the stage, and repressent the characters margical and protective powers. Therefore these puppets are referres to as “Jin Guang”(Golden Light) puppets.


Anti-communist and Anit-Soviet Puppets 反共抗俄戲偶(未完成)

The style of this puppet appearing in modern suit and hairstyle reveals political ideology. In an effort to stabilize the state of affairs in Taiwan, the government began to promote anti-communist theatre. Therefore, twently-minute propaganda dramas were usually shown before the main show.

Japanese style puppets 皇民化戲偶(未完成)

Puppets from this period show a strong Janpanese influence and look completely different from tradition models. Chinese and japanese costume styles were comblined, with puppets appering in Japanese hairstyles and Chinese traditonal dress. Scrpts were also presented in japanese and Taiwanese, and drama plots were borrowed from Japanese stories and legends.

Should-carried stage 肩擔戲臺(未完成)

The should-carried stage is widely known because it can be easily disassembled. This is convenient for the traveling performer, who can place the stage’s components into a case and carry it on his shoulders. Since the stage is small in size, it usually only has one performer, who is responsible for all the spoken lines of the performance. Moreover, this kind of performance art is said to be the original puppet theatre.

Music instruments of the glove puppet布袋戲樂器

The music of the glove puppet has change in every particular period, in the early period, traditional Nanguan music performances used fixed tunes and voices, Nanguan is noble and graceful, it is popular with the intellectual. In the middle period, the highly rhythmical music of Beiguan is to be in vogue, Beiguan is vulgar than Nanguan, but it is lively than Nanguan, so Beiguan became dominant. After 1950s, the glove puppet used pre-recorded music into the background, so the music of glove puppet will to keep on the change with the trend.

Sanxian Lute(Three-stringed Lute) (三絃)
The sanxian (three-stringed) lute is common to both Nanguan and Beiguan music traditions. The Nanguan lute is a long-necked hand-held instrument, when uses nylon strings. The front and back of its body is convered with snakeskin. Often payed in accompaniment with the PI LI lute, Nanguan’s three-stringed lute produces a sound that is both deep and full-bpdied. Beiguan’s three-stringed lute, in contrast, has a shorter neck, yet its sound is brighter. This three- stringer lute currently on display belongs to the Nan Guan music tradition.

Erxian(Two-stringed Fiddle) 二絃
The erxian two-stringed fiddle is used in Nanguan music. It is composed of a wooden body made in the shape of a drum, a neck made from the roots of bamboo joints, and silk strings. Producing a sound that is both delicate and minute, the two-stringed fiddle always acts as a supporting instrument, and therefore mostly doubles the melodies of the dong xiao vertical bamboo flute.

Yamudazai(Duck Flute) 鴨母達仔
The yamudazar is a bamboo reed pipe with seven apertures. The instrument is called duck fiute because the character “ya” in “yamudazar” represents the duck. It contains an inserted red made from the same material as the suona’s double-reed. Since the tone color of the instriment is rough and cheerless, the yamudazar is often used in sorrowful melodies. It is a Nan Guan instrument.

Aichuizai 愛吹仔
The aichuizai is also known by names “yuai” or “shaochui”. It is atype of small suona, which uses a more slender blowhole. The aichuizai’s dynamic range is smaller than that of the common suona. However, although it is smaller in sound its tone color is exquisite. It is often used in Nan Guan music.

Dizi(Traverse Flute) 笛子
The dizi traverse flute is held horizontally when played and is entirely made from hollow banboo. On the tube of the instrument is a set of apertures; located midway between the blowhole and grope of six fingerholes is an extra hole covered by a thin membrane, which produces vibrant tone color. The sound of the traverse flute is clear, relaxed, and melodious. It is played extensively in both Nanguan and Beiguan music.

Pengling(Pengling Bells) 碰鈴
Pengling bells are also called “shuangying” (double sound)or “shuangzhong” (double bells). They are pair of small copper bells, which are clapped tpgether. Pengling bells have no fixed pitch, but sound gentle and apperling to the ear, and help add richness to music. They are used in Nanguan and Beiguan tradition, and usually accompany emotionally charged melodies.

Biangu(Flat Drum) 扁鼓
The biangu flat drum is a small sized percussion instrument that can be drummed from either of its sides. When performed, the drum is held by one hand, while the other strikes it with a wooden beater. The biangu flat drum is a loe-pitched instrument, belonging to Nanguan and Beiguan music traditions.

Zhonghu(Alto Er HU Fiddle) 中胡
“Zhonghu” is the short name for an alto erhu fiddle. The zhonghu is identical in composition to the erth, but it has a large body, which is predominately covered in snakeskin. Sounding deep in timber, the zhonghu is classified as a middle register string instrument, and much resembles the role the viola plays in western classical music. It is used in both Nanguan as well as Beiguan music traditions.

Jinghu(High Fiddle) 京胡
The jinghu is employed principally in Beiguan music, and is the lead instrument in the musical accompaniment of Beiling opera, hence its name. The body of the jinghu is cylindrical, it has steel strings, and its bow is made of bamboo. It is an instrument sharp and clarion in timbre, and therefore is also called “diao gui zi” (hanging devil).

Suona 嗩吶
The word “suona” is aliteral transliteration of the Persian instrument named “suma”. Commonly referred to as “guchui” among the Tawanese, the suona is divided into tube, belowhole, and bell sections. The tubeis constructed of wood, from which are carved eight fingerholes. A double-reed is inserted into the top of the suona’s copper based blowhole, and this area rather than the bell of the instrument is where sound resonates from. The bell is also made from copper, and helps to has great dynamic range and bright tone color. Therefore, it is a suitable instrument during jubilant events, or grand theatrical scenes. The suona is often employed in Beiguan music.

Xiaoluo(Small gong) 小鑼
The xiaoluo small gong is a flat circular copper disc with a hemispheric bulge located in its center. It is a percussion instrument of the same design and function as the small gong used in the backcourt of Chinese opera. The timbre of the shaoluo gong is clear and smooth, and is used for comical effect. Theresore the instrument is usually emoloyed as background to literati, female, and comic roles as they enter and exit the stage, adding to the more subtle gestures in their performances.

Dachao(Large Cymbals) 大鈔
Dachao large cymbals are two flat copper discs with hemispheric bulbs located in their centers. When the instrument is played, the two discs are struck together to indicate changes in rhythm. These cymbals are heavy in weight, and sound full and resonant. They are used to either accent tempo, or follow the temple of gongs. Dachao cymbals are classified as a Beiguan musical instrument.

Xiaochao(Small Cymbals) 小鈔
With exception to the diameter of the instrument, Xiaochao small cymbals are identical in design to dachao large cymbals. They are, however, clearer and more minute in sound that of the dachao. Xiaochao cynbals are a Beiguan percussion instrument.

Ban(Board/Palban) 板
The ban board is a set of there separate wood slabs joined together by a cord. It is a rhythmic percussion instrument, which is played by “clapping” the boards together. In Beiguan music, the ban is used in the backcourt of a theatre to control temple, and is played by skilled percussionist.

Tonggu(Tong Drum) 通鼓
The tonggu drum is a medium-sized percussion instrument, covered on both of its drumming surfaces by leater. It is usually performed together with the shaogu small drum, and is classified as a Beiguan musical instrument. It is bright in tone color, and its name is onomatopoeic, because it makes a “tong” sound when played. The tonggu drum is usually performed during war scenes to increease the fierce and intense atmosphere of a battle.

Kouzai 扣仔
Also known as “concussion bars” or “wooden clappers”, the kouzai is a type of percussion instrument. When played, the left hand holds a slab of hardwood with a hole dug into its center, while the right hand strikes the slab with a wooden mallet. In a performance, the kouzai is usually played by a percussion instruments. The sound of the instrument is crisp, sharp, and add to the atmosphere of a drama. The kouzai is a Beiguan musical instrument.

Records and Phonograph 唱片及唱盤
The popular of televised glove puppetry led to the idolization of main characters, rather than puppet masters. In addition, background music and songs played during the appearance of main characters also became fashionable. This record, which was played for the popular television serious “Yun Zhou Da Ru Xia Shi Yan Wen” (Shi Yan Wen, the chivairous Man of Yun Province), was in fact released as a soundtrack at tha time.

Puppetry Art Center of Taipei

Puppetry Art Center of Taipei is a museum dedicated exclusively to the display, performance, teaching, and collection of puppets and puppetry. There are three areas in the Center; glove puppet area, shadow puppet area and string puppet area.

The first signs of Puppetry Art Center of Taipei go back In 1998, Lin Ching-fu(林經甫), chairman of the Taiyuan Arts(臺原藝術) and Culture Foundation, donated his personal collection of puppets, which he had gathered over several decades, to the Taipei City Government, in the hope of establishing a venue where these puppets could be preserved and exhibited in perpetuity. At last, Puppetry Art Center of Taipei was opened On August 7, 2004.

If someone has interest in the glove puppetry, there are very much antiques about glove puppetry in the Puppetry Art Center of Taipei. People can understand the history and development of puppetry, both traditional and contemporary, and make their unique hand puppets in here.

The Center’s core ideal is “For the love of creativity, for the love of puppetry”. It was hoped become a bridge between the tradition and modernity, introduce puppetry-related culture to people.

Cindy Wang, has a noble and brave heart just like Ching Yang-Zi(青陽子).

Cindy Wang, born in Taipei on March 20, 1984, is currently majoring in Mass Communication in Fu Jen Catholic University. Cindy also likes reading and writing, so she joins the Fu-Hsuen News that is a publication of Fu Jen catholic university. She believes it is a very great experience to learn how to write a newspaper and edit a publication. At present, Cindy is editor-in-chief of Fu-Hsuen News.

Cindy’s hometown is Taipei. She likes travelling, many places of Taiwan she has gone. For example, Jilong, Hsinchu, Taichung, Gaoxiong, Hualian, Nantou, Tainan and so on. She likes meeting new people and stuff; she also enjoys local fine foods and culture in travels.

Cindy’s friends said she is a boon companion; she has a noble heart just like Ching Yang-Zi who is a brave one in Pili Puppet Theatre.

Amy Ma, repays injury with kindness like Mo-Kui(魔魁).

Amy MA, 21, majoring in Mass Communication in Fu Jen Catholic University, Taiwan, is serving as Editor-in-chief for Fu Yuan, aka Fu Jen Campus, an electric newsletter covering feature stories campuswide.

In addition, I also to serve as a class representative when I am sophomore, it was made me learn more about how to keep a good interpersonal relationship with other. It made me to know more teachers and student, and more understanding the school environment.
Finally, this photo is one day I invited my friend Joyce Huang to visit the Red House in Ximen. Fortuitously, the Red House had exhibit about King Hu of 11th 2009 Taipei film festival. This exhibition to display a lot of storyboard it never public, and it could make the visitor to feel a spectacular event in the martial arts film at that period. It was very to merit exhibition for a movie fan or a student who was also major in mass communication.

1. Describe the plan about your Mook.
Our theme for Mook is palmardrama.
There are three editors in this Mook; which are: Cindy Wang, Amy Ma and Tahki Huang.
In this Mook, we will introduce the masters of palmardrama, Hai-dai Huang, Jiun-shiung Huang and Tian-lu Li, also to interview some fans and workers.
We will be visiting palmardrama museums in Yuenlin, Danshuei and Shinjuang.
In this Mook we will be debating on the topics of sexuality and Hakka hand puppet.
We will place some advertisements about National Theater Concert Hall, theatrical company, and Formosa Children’s Toys in the Mook.
We want to use palmardrama to make a history chain that links traditions and modern times together.

2.In this Mook, how to connect the palmardrama with the editors?We want to use the roles of the Taiwanese Palmardrama to represent our editor members.
In the palmardrama, they have individual roles.
For example, Ching Yang-Zi is a first-rate fighter with a respectable and brave heart.
Mo-Kui is an honest, intelligent man and keeps to his promises.
Jian Ru-Bing is a beautiful, gentle and bright woman.
Our members are Cindy Wang, Amy Ma, Tahki Huang. We represent the character of Ching Yang-Zi, Mo-Kui, Jian Ru-Bing.

3.Yuenlin is known as the “hometown of the palmardrama”. What are features of palmardrama in Yuenlin?
In Yuenlin, there are different types of palmardrama of TV or outdoor puppet show.
In 1970, Chun-Hsiung Huang created the “Shih Yen-Wen” character and broadcasted in TV. This TV programme had the record for highest TV programme rating by broadcast 583 episodes. Chun-Hsiung Huang was born in Yuenlin that is why Yuenlin became the “hometown of the palmardrama”.

4.Introduction of the palmardrama museum in Danshuei.
This house was built during the Japanese time, but it is a monument now.
This palmardrama house was established in 2003, it is constructed with local cultures. There are puppets, costumes, props, and a small classroom to teach people how to act in palmardrama.
This palmardrama house has successfully combined palmardrama with Danshuei’s old street.

5.We are studying and living in Shinjuang, can you tell us palmardrama’s development in Shinjuang?
Palmardrama was famous in Shinjuang, at the time palmardrama was highly developed in Shinjuan; Shinjuang’s 359th Lane Street was also known as “theater Lane”. There were nine groups of palmardrama in this street, and they used to act in temples in Taiwan.

6.Hai-Dai Huang is one of masters of the Taiwanese Hand Puppet Theatre. Can you explain what his achievements are?
1. Hai-Dai Huang is one of the masters in Taiwan’s palmardrama, he had created “Intercontinental Garden” in palmardrama theatrical company. He taught his sons Chun-Hing Huang and Chun-Hsiung Huang in the company, and his sons successfully enhanced palmardrama. After Hai-Dai Huang died, people called him “the god of Taiwan’s palmardrama”, and people has made Hai-Dai Huang‘s birthday as the Palmardrama’s day.

7.Tian-Lu Li is a very important person of the Taiwanese Hand Puppet Theatre. What did he do for palmardrama?
Tian-lu Li is a very important person of the palmardrama. In 1945, when Taiwan was still under the Japanese colonial rule, the palmardrama was the important entertainment for people, Tian-lu Li created the Fashionable Clothing Palmardrama.
When Tian-lu Li was 65 years old, he taught a French apprentice, the apprentice publicised the palmardrama in Europe, Tian-lu Li and his palmardrama became famous in Europe.

8.The palmardrama has been separated into many periods. What are the palmardrama’s characteristics in the early periods?In the early periods, the palmardrama usually played outdoors, the scripts are usually related to old books and novels.
In 1920, the palmardrama’s scripts are usually related with Wuxia Novels and focused on the special effects.
In 1950, palmardrama focused on the beauty of scenery and costumes and the use of light and sound effects.

9. Can you explain what is the most popular the palmardrama nowadays?
The Pili palmardrama is the most popular in Taiwan nowadays. The Pili palmardrama has its own Pili Satellite TV channel, and the most popular movie of “Legend of the Sacred Stone”.
Pili palmardrama TV programme started in 1985, and still continues today. It is one of the most popular TV programme in Taiwan. Pili palmardrama show is performed by many kinds of puppets, some are cool, some are intelligent, and some are funny. Unlike traditional palmardrama shows, Pili palmardrama uses state-of-the-art animation to help presenting its fighting art.

10.How to bring the traditional palmardrama into modern times?
The traditional palmardrama is declining gradually, but we thought that some changes are needed in palmardrama to catch young people’s eyes with new marketing styles.
They can develop the new commodity, for example toys, cartoons, movies, music, comic books, TV and/or PC Games. They can also use the Internet Marketing to popularise palmardrama. Most importantly, they must create new stories and new scripts in which the young people are interested in.
